The Atlas® E. coli O157:H7 EG2 Detection Assay is the first AOAC-approved assay to test for the presence of Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7—the E. coli strain most commonly associated with foodborne illness—in beef and produce samples. E. coli O157:H7 belongs to a serogroup of E. coli organisms known as Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), the most severe form of E. coli. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that there are approximately 265,000 STEC-related infections annually in the United States. More than one-third (36%) of these infections are believed to be related to O157 STEC, the most widely reported STEC to cause human illness, accounting for 96,000 foodborne illnesses annually.1
